06-06 February
event image
Waitangi Day is the New Zealand national day celebrated each year on February 6.

Waitangi Day thus marks the coming together in friendship of the Maori people and the white European settlers although it hasn’t been an easy road from there. Official celebrations are held at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds in the Bay of Islands, Northland, but there are also many other events throughout the country. Maori cultural performances, speeches from Maori and Pakeha (European) dignitaries, and a naval salute are all part of the annual activities at Waitangi. Waitangi Day celebrations cover all sorts of occasions from major sporting events to rodeos, and even a 'cheese-rolling' competition. Waitangi day events include  Maori cultural performance, Speeches from Maori and Pakeha (European) dignitaries, A re-launch of the world's largest Maori ceremonial waka (war canoe), Free three-day family festival of music, dance, sport, food and traditional Maori customs, including Ki-o-rahi, a Maori game that may be even older than rugby.
