National Holiday Greece
28-28 October
event image
This is the day of the National Anniversary of Greek Independence. The day military parades and folk dances and Greek Orthodox churches hold special services.

The day is also called "Ochi Day" in celebration of Greece refusal to yield to the powers of the Axis in 1940. The Greek National Day remembers the day in October 1940 when the Greek General Ioannis Metaxas answered a defiant 'ochi' to Italy's request to cross the country en route to Russia. The answer pitted the nations against one another and forced the Italians to invade the island ultimately dragging Greece into the war. Greece celebrates its defiance with a series of national events, parades and church services. On Ochi Day, all major cities offer a military parade, and many Greek Orthodox churches will be holding special services. Coastal towns may have naval parades or other celebrations on the waterfront. The top students are flagbearers in parades all over the country, great national pride, stirring speeches, loud anthems, an all round good show.
