An alert driver on Monday averted a major train accident by using emergency brake when the Howrah bound down Rajdhani Express developed a technical snag outside Baruipur station in Hooghly district resulting in derailment of two wheels of the engine car.
Driver Mahendra Singh, who held the wheels from Dhanbad staion, said,"I used the emergency brake when a specific brake for wheel No 8 develop a snag resulting in derailment of the wheels of the engine car."I heard a big sound soon after passing through the Baruipur station and found the brake for wheel No 8 is not working. It also resulted in damages to the tracks, forcing about 300 pandrol clips "that bind the tracks to the sleepers" out of their position.None of the passengers was injured.There is no prima facie evidence of sabotage in the incident. Sniffer dogs were brought to assist investigation.
